A 16 year old boy was my delightful house guest this evening. Some of us cringe at the thought of family visiting, while others break their heads on how to provide for them during their short stay. It’s been a while since I had anyone stay over, so I actually didn’t bother much besides just wonder how much a teenager eats.
During my childhood, I clearly recall house guests (mostly family) being a part of the family all through the holidays. There was plenty of food and more enjoyable treats laid out on the table. Somehow, entertaining didn’t seem to be a chore at home. Today, the thought of entertaining brings a frown on people’s faces. We are just not equipped to open our homes as easily anymore.
I was blown away by this lad; he was polite, charming and didn’t give me any trouble at all. He ate what was given to him, helped himself quietly to whatever else he wanted, folded his clothes neatly and presented himself at all times fully attired in the presence of people.
Lately, I realized I was mortified to see the attitude of youngsters who are lacking in the right attitude and spirit. Most of them seemed to be spoiled rotten at home. They eat like pigs, slouch when sitting, barely greet guests, back talk parents and have no etiquette whatsoever.
This boy was a refreshing change to my recent observations. He’s an amateur golfer with tremendous potential. Of all the young men I know, this one should be the one with bad attitude, considering the praises lavished on him, the media attention etc.; surprisingly, nothing has gone to his head. He has a strong head on his shoulders, has passion for sport, a hunger to be better and remarkable modesty.
I hope to meet more well-behaved youngsters in the future, so this feeling that the next generation doesn’t fall prey to the evils of society.
